Deja Rene Carr (AKA Mal Devisa): Elbow Sugar

Deja Rene (pronounced Rheen) Carr is a 28 year old Poet, Artist, Musician, Conceptual Artist, Comedian born in Manhattan NY, now residing in Amherst, Massachusetts . She spent her first two collegiate years at Hampshire College and is now completing her BA in English at Umass Amherst. Her art is wide-reaching, at times chaotic, funny yet arresting, and beautifully rooted in the Black experience of the fringe- space. She lives by the phrase: The personal is political, and never shys to show us the underbelly of the American Psyche she was raised and steeped in. “So much of what I do is in an attempt to write about love, and then I realize, maybe there are prerequisites to knowing love. It exists all along, yes, but to know it as a whole on a systemic level, there might be some ideas to wade through first.” Deja Carr is also Mal Devisa, her main artistic project that weaves story telling, beats of various genres, and previously performance art with her unmistakable raw voice. She loves poetry and poets an incredible amount and wants to thank The Bodily Press for being a wonderful outlet for her new work.
